About Chunming Yu

1955 – Mr. Yu was born in Jiangsu Province, China.

1972 – He studied painting while he made a living by working for a moving company, the highlight of his day was to come home and paint.

1978 – After ten years of Culture Revolution, universities and colleges across China re-opened to welcome eager students. Mr. Yu was among the handful lucky ones who were admitted to China Academy of Art in Huangzhou, one of the most prestigious art institutions in the country.

1982 – Upon graduation, Mr.Yu became an art teacher in architecture department of Jiangxi Tech University. It was during this period, he consciously started seeking an individual voice as a painter. Deeply moved by the spirit of historical folk houses, he made numerous trips to remote countryside of various regions of China, and accumulated three thousands sketches and watercolors over eighteen years. Chinese folk houses thus became a recurring subject of Mr. Yu’s work. His paintings gained recognition nationwide, and were collected by Chinese National Museum of Fine Art in Beijing.

1997 – Mr.Yu arrived in United States as a visiting Professor in UCLA. He eventually settled down in the Bay Areas. As an immigrant, Mr.Yu struggled in learning the new language and new culture. However, he never gave up exploration in his art. Now painting full time, Mr. Yu focuses on oil paintings and constantly challenges the boundaries of the art world of east and west.
